Gay and Lesbian Pride Month-June 4, 2008 The Peace Corps is dedicated to fostering an environment of understanding and respect for all staff and Volunteers. In this spirit, I am pleased to recognize June 2008 as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month at the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps recognizes the strength, energy, and creativity that diversity brings to the workforce and the Volunteer corps. To this end, creating a work environment where each employee and Volunteer is valued and afforded mutual respect is a key element of the Peace Corps’ organizational culture. This month’s observance was first commemorated in 1999 to honor the historic Stonewall Rebellion, an important turning point in civil rights for gay and lesbian Americans. While gay and lesbian Americans enrich our society and workforce, let us not forget the impact and dedication gay and lesbian Volunteers have within their respective overseas communities. Recognizing the talent, skill, and motivation of each person contributes to the cause of goodwill and improved understanding. During this month, let us reflect on how we can build a more inclusive society that embraces diversity and affirms basic human and civil rights. We will continue to honor and respect the commitment that gay and lesbian Volunteers and employees have on the Peace Corps’ mission here and around the world. - Ron Tschetter, Director |
